Indications
It is indicated to treat dynamic facial wrinkles, caused by repetitive muscle movements, the typical vices of expression, which appear when the facial muscles are in motion.
For static wrinkles, those that appear even when the face is still, there are more effective procedures, such as fillers, CO2 fractional laser and others.
One must be aware that botulinum toxin does not act on sagging skin. It only prevents muscle contraction, which is what forms the (dynamic!) wrinkle.
The areas most benefited by the technique are forehead wrinkles, glabella (vertical lines above the nose, between the eyebrows), periorbital wrinkles (crow’s feet) and other expression lines around the eyes.
Vertical wrinkles that appear at the edge of the upper lips, especially in smokers (the so-called bar code), can also be treated with the toxin, but usually require a complementary procedure.
Wrinkles in the nasolabial fold (Chinese moustache) are treated with dermal fillers.
Contraindications
However, there are some important contraindications, such as…
- allergy to botulinum toxin and/or albumin (egg protein);
- presence of infections in the area to be treated;
- individuals taking medication that interferes with neuromuscular transmission, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics;
- people with autoimmune diseases (in which antibodies attack healthy cells in the body);
- pregnancy and lactation
- among others.
Results and durability
The results of Botox generally last 4 to 6 months. During this period, wrinkles are smoothed out and the skin takes on a more youthful and revitalized appearance. After this period, a new application can be carried out. If a touch-up or complementary session is required, this should take place no later than 20 days after the application.
How long the effect lasts depends on how long it takes for the botulinum toxin to be eliminated. The factors that influence duration are dose and muscle strength. Although controversial, the question of whether or not the body creates resistance and then needs higher doses and shorter intervals is still a relevant issue, and is a reason to avoid abusing the quantity and frequency of applications.
It is therefore not recommended to reapply excessively frequently before the recommended average period of 4 to 6 months, in order to prevent the body from developing a resistance to the product.
Possible complications and how to avoid them?
Although rare, complications such as swelling or asymmetry can occur. To avoid complications, it is essential to choose a qualified professional and follow all pre- and post-procedure instructions carefully.
Are there any preparations?
Before the procedure, it is important to inform your doctor of any pre-existing medical conditions and medications you are taking.
Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes can also help reduce the risk of complications.
Post-procedure care and restrictions
To ensure optimal and long-lasting results after Botox application, it is recommended to avoid…
- lying down for 4 hours after the application,
- exercising within the first 24 hours,
- massaging the treated area and
- applying creams to the face for one day.
On the other hand, contracting the muscles of the treated area after application improves muscle blockage.
Possible combination with other procedures
Botox is the only procedure that works on the muscle. It can be complemented with other cosmetic procedures that stimulate collagen and cell renewal to provide a more complete approach to rejuvenating the skin and preventing the appearance of new wrinkles, in a protocol known as facial harmonization (link). But the goals of each procedure are different.
Botox has a preventive action. By paralyzing dynamic wrinkles, it prevents the appearance of new age marks and the worsening of existing ones. Other procedures are therefore no substitute.
In short, Botox is much more than a simple cosmetic treatment – it’s an effective way of restoring youth and confidence in your appearance. With proper care and professional follow-up, you can enjoy visibly younger, more radiant skin in a matter of minutes.
