Due to the similarities regarding the surgical procedure, we will approach here:

• The reduction mammoplasty (breast reduction) and
• The mastopexy (breast lift, surgery for skin removal in case of flabby breasts).

Brief description

The surgery for reducing breast volume and/or sagging figures among the most common plastic surgeries, recommended…

• to improve the breast shape,
• as a complementary procedure in the prophylactic treatment of certain breast diseases (special cases),
• or to prevent problems caused by oversized breasts (hypermastias), such as severe muscle pain in the upper back due to overload.

This surgery reduces the breasts’ volume (in case of reduction mammoplasty) and improves their consistency and shape.

A breast lift (mastopexy) can be possibly combined with a breast implant.

The scars

Typically, the scars assume the form of an upside down “T” at the lower part of the breast. Besides the scar around the nipple, which is quite discrete due to the typical color transition between the normal skin and the nipple.

Postoperative period

The postoperative period of a breast reduction or lift is usually not painful, but it involves some initial restrictions on the arm movements, which are essential for a good clinical postoperative evolution.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding after mammoplasty

The surgery outcome can be preserved, as long as the gynecologist supports you regarding weight gain management during your pregnancy. Regarding breastfeeding, in case of originally very large then markedly reduced breasts, lactation may be impaired. In cases of small and medium-sized reductions, lactation is preserved.
